Sethu Bandhasana, or more commonly known as Bridge Pose, works to realign the spine, and correct rounded shoulders.
It also relieves backache and strengthens the back, buttock and neck muscles. It also stretches the abdominal organs and improves digestion.
This pose is a backbending pose, so it opens the chest and strengthens the lungs. It also brings blood to the pineal, pituitary, thyroid and adrenal glands, helping them work more efficiently.
On the energetic level, Bridge Pose helps to rid the mind of anxiety, and calm the practitioner.
However, due to the inverted nature of this pose, it is not for those with high blood pressure nor women who are menstruating. Since much weight is on the shoulders and head, those with neck issues are strongly advised to practice under the supervision of an experienced teacher.
