Asana (postures) is probably the form of yoga most people are familiar with. The reason Asana is included in the 8 Limbs is because a healthy physical body is a prerequisite to a happy emotional/mental body. Why? Think about it - if you are having a stomach ache, can you sit & ponder the deeper aspects of life? Or is your mind only thinking about running off to the bathroom?
The main idea of Asana is to bring the physical body to its ideal state of health, so that we can proceed further into other aspects of our spirituality.
